Please Help Restore Monarch Butterflies!Hi. I'm Leo and this is my wife, Dorothy. We are wildlife photographers from Alaska. We loved Alaska for over 20 years and moved to Montana in 2005. In Alaska, we specialized in working with eagles, wolves, and bears. We also got involved with protecting the McNeil River bears and the Toklat wolves of Denali National Park. Our efforts were successful and we were featured on the CBS Evening News three times. Recently, we've discovered another critter that needs our help. Monarch butterfly numbers are plummeting. Monarchs migrate from the United States and Canada to overwintering areas in Mexico and California. Unfortunately, the annual migration event is now classified as "ENDANGERED". Three things are threatening monarchs as never before: 1) In the last decade, three massive storms have hit central Mexico in January and February, killing from 50 - 80% of the overwintering Monarchs. 2) Development of shopping centers, subdivisions, and factories accounts for an annual loss of over 2 million acres of habitat a year. 3) Monarch butterflies will only lay their eggs on milkweed. In 1996, genetically modified corn and soybeans were introduced that were resistant to an herbicide commonly referred to as Roundup. Milkweed can survive tilling but not Roundup. Over 100 million acres of habitat have been lost due to these genetically modified crops. How can we just stand by and do nothing? We can't, so we developed a plan to help reverse this trend. We are very grateful for the growing popularity of crowdfunding. Our plan to help restore monarchs involves launching a project on Kickstarter.com. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The American Indian Butterfly Legend If anyone desires a wish to come true they must first catch a butterfly and whisper that wish to it. Since a butterfly can make no sound, the butterfly can not reveal the wish to anyone but the Great Spirit who hears and sees all. So, according to the legend, by making a wish and giving the butterfly its freedom, in gratitude the wish will be taken to the heavens by the butterfly and be granted by the Great Spirit. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
